Ronald Bailey explores 'Does Religion Make People Nicer?'

This observation accords with numerous studies showing that people behave better when they think that someone may be watching them. For example, one remarkable study in 2006 found that just being under the gaze of eyes on a poster nearly tripled the contributions to an office coffee kitty. Exposing participants in a laboratory economic game to computer-generated eyespots while they played made them twice as generous as those who were not. Another study found that participants in a laboratory economic game were nearly four times stingier with other players when they thought they were anonymous than when they thought they were being observed. In other words, watched people are nicer people. Why should that be? It's because we want to have the reputation of being cooperative and prosocial so that other people, especially strangers, will want to cooperate with us.

Interesting!

No blades in temple!

  • Jun. 2nd, 2008 at 6:49 PM
Punyaham(Purification) was conducted in Guruvayoor temple because a razor blade was found in the sanctum santorium. Some people who visit the place are worse and have tongue sharper than a blade so how about "purifying" after each and every person visits the place?!

why am i so obsessed thinking about religion??
i dont understand religion first of all...
i cant understand how billions have been influenced..influenced to point that they are almost intoxicated by religion, ppl are so passionate about their religion that if you question their beliefs they become aggressively defensive! no one can explain their beliefs, no one knows why they believe in the first place....they just believe, its a feeling within.
isnt that funny??...you dont know anything about it for exact yet it invokes lot of passion....

i find it very weird when i hear people quote the bible to prove a point to a non-believer.

give them some facts man!.....instead of your beliefs!

God has nothing to do with religion...

  • Jun. 27th, 2007 at 2:13 PM
all religion basically spreads the message of peace , love and harmony....do "good", speak "good", think "good" ...be good human beings!....
Everyones prayers are answered...or not answered irrespective of the religion he follows.....since that is the case then either there is only one God or there is no God at all*......
then y do we divide ourselves on the basis of religion?...kill in the name of religion?!!...why do we have religions in the first place??!!
religions are man-made barriers...God has nothing to do with it !!

*i dont wanna get into a debate abt the existence of God....coz u can debate for as long as u wanna without any result!

i believe in god but not in religion........i believe in prayer but not in church.

just wondering!!

  • Aug. 5th, 2006 at 11:04 AM
how do we differentiate ppl who r really inspired by god and ppl who are not?? ppl like matha amrithananda mayi, sai baba and other similar ppl....they all preach good things, the way to live...heal ppl of their diseases...they have a large no. of ollowers too! yet....there still is a large section of ppl ,including me,who believe these ppl r fraud and fooling the public to make money.
dont u think jews during jesus' time faced similar situation, when jesus preached he was the son of god? during those times the society was church-centric....so they conspired against them and crucified him. but now our societies hav become more politics-centric and church and religion takes a back seat so generally no one is harmed in the name of preaching his or her faith.
but i was just wondering.....if we lived in the era of jesus...dont u think we wud have condemned jesus?
